Stun Gun Or Taser, Which One Is For You?
By Phil Ford
Is the Stun Gun or Taser the right self-defense weapon for you? Let us take a quick look at both. First, I would like to point out that Stun Guns and Tasers are non-lethal weapons and cause no permanent damage. Stun Guns and Tasers use high-voltage electricity with low amperage to temporarily disable an attacker for several minutes. The energy stored in the Stun gun is transferred into the attacker's muscles, causing the muscles to work very rapidly. This rapid work cycle instantly depletes the attacker's blood sugar levels by converting it to lactic acid. Thus, he is unable to produce energy for his muscles and his body is unable to function properly. Stun guns also interrupt the tiny neurological impulses that control and direct voluntary muscle movement. When an attacker is struck with a Stun gun his neuromuscular system overloads - resulting in a loss of balance and body control. This affect is completely localized to the attacker. Even if the attacker is making physical contact with the victim, the electrical current WILL NOT pass to the victim. This localized effect holds true even if the attacker and victim are standing in a pool of water. THE STUN GUN - There are models, styles, and voltage ranges to fit almost anybody's self-defense needs. The voltage can range from 100,000 volts or all the way up to about three million volts. Either way, that's plenty of knock down power! Additionally, they usually come with a belt loop holster. This holster can often draw attention from people because of its size and recognizable features. The STUN BATON is exactly what the name implies. It looks like a baton - more commonly called a nightstick - but packs an electric shock. I've seen models with the voltages up to 800,000 volts. Stun Batons have metal strips along the barrel. These strips enable the Baton to deliver a shock, if an attacker is so unlucky to contact them. This type of Stun gun is popular with the security guards. However, Stun Batons tend to draw a lot of attention and necessarily would not be a good choice for the average person looking for a low-profile self-defense weapon. THE MINI STUN GUN - There are several models of this version, all excellent choices. The Stun Master Hot Shot is a small, yet powerful weapon. It is about three inches long and looks like a modern cell phone. But this is no ordinary cell phone; it delivers a hard-hitting electrical shock of 975,000 volts. Another popular mini Stun gun is the Runt Stun Gun. The first three models - a 350,000 volt, a 650,000 volt, and the 950,000 volt - all run on three CR123A Lithium batteries. The fourth model is the 950,000 volt mini stun gun that is rechargeable. The benefit of any of these Mini Stun guns is its small size and its ability to remain hidden. Any of these would be a very prudent choice for personal self-defense. THE CELL PHONE STUN GUN - Many people want the power and benefits of a Stun gun without the large size or its recognizable features. If you are looking for a Stun device that you can conceal, then consider purchasing a Cell Phone Stun Gun. Several models are available. Some contain added safety features like a built-in flashlight and alarm. But all contain enough power to thwart any would be attacker - up to 950,000 volts. It is my professional opinion that these Cell Phone Stun Guns are the perfect stealth self-defense weapon. When considering a Stun gun there are a couple of factors to keep in mind. First, Stun Guns with high-voltage will be able to penetrate clothing easier than low-voltage Stun Guns. Furthermore, high-voltage Stun Guns will affect the attacker more quickly. Once you get your stun gun, read the operating instructions very carefully. Become very familiar with your Stun Gun - know how it fits in your hands, where the safety switch is, and how to fire it. After much practice, using your Stun Gun will become second nature to you. This is helpful because during an attack, you won't have time to think - you will only have time to act. Press the Stun gun firmly against your attacker (preferably his main torso) and stun him for five or more seconds. Once the shock is applied, it will take the attacker time to recover - time that will enable you to escape! Remember, don't feel sorry for the attacker - after all, HE attacked you! THE TASER - This self-defense weapon, popular with police departments, shoots out two darts attached to 15 feet of wire. An electrical current of 50,000 volts travels over the wires, overloading the central nervous system and providing incredible take down power. In addition, if a close quarter defense is warranted, then the TASER can double as a stun gun. This backup capability makes the TASER a truly versatile weapon. TASER technology has proven itself a safe and effective choice with over 500,000 worldwide users. The X26C TASER is a widely popular model used by law enforcement agencies worldwide. This TASER may not be a practical choice because of its cost, it lists for $999.00. On the other hand, the M26C may be a better choice, it list for $499.00. However, it still has the appearance of a handgun and isn't easy to conceal. As a result, my TASER of choice is the TASER C2. This new TASER is designed solely for personal protection. It utilizes the same technology as their proven law enforcement models. The TASER C2 has incredible take down power and is small enough to conceal - 5.5" (L) x 2.10" (W) x 1.25" (H). In my opinion, this is an excellent self-defense weapon and is affordable to almost any budget.
